Exhibition by Martina Goričanec, Angela Maksimović and Michel Mesarić, students at the Academy of Applied Arts at the University of Rijeka, demonstrates one of the ways of artistic exploration within the experimental relationship of sound and image.

In her video work San ili java (Dream or Reality) Martina Goričanec interweaves the unclear images of a dream with vivid images of the reality, encouraging the viewer to think about what is real. Confusion is enhanced through sound created in collaboration with Dalibor Hrelja. The narrator is followed by analog sounds of rain, wind and birds, opposing the digitally synthesized sounds. In that way, an effect of synesthesia is established, underlying the impression of irreality.

Inspired by illusion as a phenomenon, in the video titled Iluzija života (The Illusion of Life), Angela Maksimović creates an image of abstract flickering forms. In a video that looks like a digitally noted sound, experimenting with contrasts and the effects of analog recordings of raindrops, an illusion was created. The sound is also an illusion, since it is a result of digital processing of the video, that is, of turning the video into a sound format. The illusion of an artwork is therefore presented as a symbol of the illusion of life.

Michel Mesarić's Outside In represents a skater's experience. The quickly exchanging flashes chaotically switch from one to another, showing scenes of the skater's physical surrounding – of asphalt, of the skateboard or a street – and the abstract scenes that depict the skater's mental images as reactions to the surrounding. The experience is also expressed in sound, through sudden exchange of the sound of an electric guitar merged with the sound of concreting, of the skateboard wheels and the boards. A „noise“ of sounds is created, combining the sound from the real world and buzzing that represents confusing thoughts of the skater.
